LaVern was born just outside of Riding Mountain National Park. With it’s abundance of wildlife and natural
serenity brought about the discovery of his Artist Creativity at an early age. While in Brandon, Manitoba, he pursued his
artist ability, which eventually led to the Art of Taxidermy and later to a Commercial Art career.
LaVern relocated to the northeast region of Saskatchewan in 1979 where he continued to pursue his passion
for creating Art. Influenced by the Impressionistic Realism works of Carl Rungius, Manfred Schatz, Bob Kuhn, and Ken Carlson.
He developed his own unique style, inviting the viewer to share in his passion for Nature’s Tranquility and Peace.
Although still active in the sign-making business, he finds time to hone his skill of painting and carving
nature’s grandeur. This Saskatchewan Artist has been especially proud of his work with conservation groups and other
organizations dedicated to preserving and protecting Wildlife and Natural Habitat.
LaVern has won many awards at prestigious art shows and plans to compete Internationall
 I draw & paint most subjects, but I’m compelled to do animals. I am intrigued
by all animals, especially the ones I grew up around: deer, elk, moose, bear, coyote, and wolf. I've spent most of my
life in the wilderness, hunting & fishing, or just being there. It takes patience & countless
hours of drawing to capture the conceptual composition, behavior and habitat of any animal. I was gifted with the ability
to draw, but it still takes hours of sketching, painting & most of all field work to get the picture right. I am never
satisfied, that’s what keeps me going. I have spent much time developing a knowledge of the field, which is reflected
in my work. So few people ever get the opportunity to see the other
side of animal behavior. I hope through my paintings that I can convey this sometime- unknown facet of nature’s wonders.
I am continually impressed by the beauty and power of nature. I am always searching for different
subjects, exploring new ideas to create. Art Store
